I tend to photograph places, people and things rather quickly, seeking decisive moments when light, action and scene harmonize. But once in a while, I love to immerse myself in finding and capturing scenes that are less ephemeral, making pictures more crafted than captured. And water has long been a theme in my life.
I started doing this decades back when I visited mountain streams hours away from our home in the flat South Carolina Lowcountry. I’ve continued during my travels across America. And since we settled in our high mountain valley in 2013, I’ve stepped out nearly every autumn to photograph our mountain streams when aspen trees turn yellow and drop their leaves among other changing foliage. The cascades turn to angel hair when I photograph them at slow shutter speeds, a simple phenomenon that challenges my composition skills, pleases and comforts me.
